For nearly 90 years, our community has been taught one simple idea: the Humane Society is where you go to drop off unwanted animals.
And for decades, Halifax Humane Society has honored that role. We will always be a safe place for animals who truly need a new home. That commitment has not changed.
What has changed is how we serve our community — and how we think about helping animals before they ever need to enter a shelter.
Meeting Families Where They Are
Every day, families reach out to us because they are struggling with a temporary challenge: a sudden financial hardship, a pet behavior issue, an unexpected veterinary bill, or a housing transition. Too often in the past, the only option presented to them was surrender.
We know now that surrender is rarely what people want. Most families love their pets deeply and simply need help, guidance, or time.
Today, Halifax Humane Society is focused on meeting families where they are — without judgment — and working together to find solutions that keep pets in their homes whenever possible.
Because the best place for a pet is with the family who already loves them.
Introducing the Animal Resource Center
This shift in philosophy led us to make an important change: what was once called our Admissions Department is now the Animal Resource Center.
Why the change? Because words matter.
“Admissions” implies intake. Drop-off. The end of the road. The Animal Resource Center represents something entirely different: problem-solving, support, and pathways to help.
It is now the first place families can turn when they don’t know where else to go — not to give up on their pets, but to ask for help.
Safety Net Programs That Keep Pets and Families Together
At the heart of the Animal Resource Center is a growing collection of Animal Safety Net programs designed to prevent unnecessary shelter intake and reduce overcrowding — while strengthening the human-animal bond.
These programs include:
• Pet Food Pantry assistance
• Training and behavior support
• Access to veterinary care
Together, these resources allow us to focus on resolution instead of relinquishment.
From Drop-Off Center to Problem-Resolution Center
The Animal Resource Center reflects a broader evolution in animal welfare. Modern humane organizations are no longer measured solely by how many animals they take in, but by how effectively they help animals never need to enter the shelter at all.
Our Commitment Remains the Same
Halifax Humane Society will always be here for animals in need of a new home. That promise is unwavering.
But today, we are also here for the families who are trying — sometimes desperately — to keep their pets.
The Animal Resource Center is not just a new name. It is a reflection of who we are becoming: a place of help, hope, and solutions — for pets and the people who love them.
